One Child Center for Autism is a therapy based organization dedicated to serving children and families affected by Autism in the greater Williamsburg area. Founded in 2013, One Child is working to provide Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA), Speech Language Pathology (to include social skills groups), and Counseling services to families regardless of financial circumstances.

Currently, One Child is conducting Skill Builders: A LEGO® Social Skills Group. Skill Builders is a FREE Social Skills group offered by One Child Center for Autism in collaboration with Beyond Bricks. Skill Builders is conducted by a Speech Language Pathologist and an ABA Tutor who will use Lego® to improve each child’s understanding of social cues, refine problem solving skills, practice conversational language, and develop creative play. During Skill Builders meetings, Siblings are welcome to play in Beyond Bricks open LEGO® play area FREE of charge.

What is a Social Skills Group? Children with Autism often have trouble interacting with their peers and/or navigating social settings Social skills groups address these issues by targeting pragmatic language skills (e.g., joint attention, eye-contact, verbal exchanges), social skills (e.g., social awareness, problem solving), and life skills (e.g., self regulation, self advocacy).

Why provide siblings the opportunity to play LEGO® during Skill Builders? Siblings of special needs children often spend a lot of time sitting in waiting rooms while their brother or sister get to “play” (aka- therapy). In keeping with One Child’s mission to help the entire family, we feel that providing fun for siblings as well makes for a better experience for the entire family!

One Child aims to:

  • Promote the development of functional communication and social skills for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) through an individualized collaborative approach of therapy interventions.
  • Provide access to evidence based theory practices for children with ASD without insurance or strained financial resources
  • Provide support and encouragement to the parents and siblings of a child with ASD
  • Promote increased awareness of ASD through education and collaboration in the greater Williamsburg community.
