Peninsula Fine Arts Center Free 1st Weekend of Every Month

PFAC’s next free weekend will be Sept. 6-7.

August 29, 2014

The first weekend of every month is free at the Peninsula Fine Arts Center, where patrons can enjoy changing exhibitions and the permanent Hands On for Kids Gallery. PFAC’s next free weekend will be Sept. 6-7.

PFAC’s Free First Weekends is offered with support from the Noland Memorial Foundation as part of its Art Access project. Art Access endeavors to remove financial barriers from art, ensuring families of all backgrounds can seek inspiration in PFAC’s galleries.

This month, visitors will have a free chance to view “NEXT: Emerging Virginia Artists,” featuring new works by 10 rising talents hailing from or working in the Commonwealth. The exhibition includes works of all mediums, from wood engravings by Tim Skirven to original photography by Jason Stick. The show also has three site-specific installations, never to be seen again anywhere else: a mural by Hampton Boyer; an installation made with artists’ tape by Kelsey Witt; and a custom large-scale collage by Stacia Yeapanis. The exhibit is on view until Oct. 12.

Patrons also have opportunities to visit PFAC for free during its monthly Poetry Nights, held on the second Thursday of every month. In addition, free admission, performances and crafts are offered from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Sept. 20 and Oct. 25 Community Days.

The Peninsula Fine Arts Center is located at 101 Museum Drive within Mariners’ Museum Park in Newport News, Va. The center is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sundays; PFAC is closed on Mondays. Admission is regularly $7.50 for adults, $4 for children (ages 6-12) and free for children 5 and under. Annual membership is $40 for individuals and $60 for families.
