PFAC Art Start Program Offers Preschool Activities Each Wednesday
NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Preschoolers get a very early introduction to art in the Peninsula Fine Arts Center’s Art Start program, now in its second year.

The program, funded in part by Wells Fargo, offers guided art activities at 10:30 a.m. each Wednesday for students ages 2-5. The activities have no additional cost beyond adult admission.  While creating new crafts each week, preschoolers boost their fine motor skills, think creatively and socialize with other young artists.

Students must be accompanied by an adult.  Registration for each week's classes is required by the preceding Friday and walk-ins cannot be accommodated if the class is at capacity. RSVP tojdobson@pfac-va.org .

September

• Sept. 24: Geometric Tape Art: Creativity rules in this activity inspired by PFAC’s tape installation by Kelsey Witt. Preschoolers will explore Witt’s work, then create their own washi tape artwork.

October

• Oct. 1: Fingerprint Dandelion: Fingerprints dipped in white paint create dandelions when pressed onto construction paper.
• Oct. 8: Foam Cup Cow: We’ll create a cow puppet by painting a foam cup and adding pipe cleaner ears.
• Oct. 15: Mix-N-Match Picasso Portraits: Young masters can choose from assorted face features to create their own Picasso-inspired portraits.
• Oct. 22: Marbled Earth Print: We’ll explore the new exhibit, “Environmental Impact,” and then create marbled Earth prints using shaving cream and paint.
• Oct. 29: Masking Tape Mummies & Q-Tip Skeletons: Our little artists can create two spooky crafts: a masking tape mummy or a q-tip skeleton. Wear a costume for fun!

November

• Nov. 5: Leaf Rubbing: We’ll gather fallen leaves in our lovely yard, then bring them inside to create colorful leaf rubbings using crayons over paper.
• Nov. 12: Pointillist Fall Tree: Using Q-tips, we’ll paint fall trees with dots like pointillism master Georges Seurat.
• Nov. 19: Tricolor Turkey: This special turkey has tricolor pasta for feathers!

December

• Dec. 3: Koinobori Flying Carp: We’ll make our own versions of this traditional Japanese decorative streamer using tissue paper, toilet paper rolls and yarn!
• Dec. 10: Reindeer Frames: Our little artists will create a frame using popsicle sticks, then decorate the frame to look like a reindeer.
• Dec. 17: Holiday Wreathes: Preschoolers can hang their own wreath at home, created with paper plates, pom poms and yarn.

In addition to Art Start, PFAC offers two Saturday classes this fall for preschoolers. From 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Oct. 11, students can bring nature inside to create clay leaf ornaments. From 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Nov. 15, little authors can decorate their own books, then draw what they’re grateful for, just in time for Thanksgiving. Both classes are $12 for members and $15 for nonmembers per class. To register, call (757) 596-8175.
