Peninsula Fine Arts Center’s Art Start Activities

January 22, 2015

The Peninsula Fine Arts Center’s schedule for our Art Start activities this winter. Art Start is a preschool art education program offering guided art activities from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesdays at no additional cost beyond adult admission. The lessons, taught by Rosa Lee Harkrader, change every week and are intended to emphasize motor skill development, socialization and an introduction to artistic concepts, from color theory to multicultural artistic traditions.

Because space is limited, an RSVP is requested by the Tuesday before each class.

January

  • Jan. 21: Paper Plate African Necklaces: Simple shapes and bright colors turn paper plates into regal African necklaces, perfect to wear while exploring our new exhibit, “Looking Both Ways.”
  • Jan. 28: Painting with Glue and Salt: Paintings become 3-D when our artists “paint” with glue, cover with salt and then tap with liquid watercolor, watching the color spread through the salt.

February

  • Feb. 4: Magic Marker Kente Cloth: Little artists can explore color and pattern when they create their own construction paper “cloths” inspired by the kente cloths of Ghana.
  • Feb. 11: Paper Heart Penguins: We’ll practice our cutting skills making adorable penguins from paper hearts.
  • Feb. 18: Chinese Fan: We’ll learn all about folding paper when we make our own decorated Chinese paper fans!
  • Feb. 25: Blow Painting: Watch what happens when you blow on a puddle of paint—it spreads!

March

  • March 4: Clothespin Caterpillars: A clothespin becomes a cute caterpillar with a few pomp oms, googly eyes and pipe cleaner “antenna.”
  • March 11: Little ones will create their own 2-D fish bowls with paper plates, beans and creative, colorful drawn fish.
  • March 18: Fork Tulips: Help us welcome spring by pressing painted forks onto paper, creating a field of tulips.
