The Virginia Living Museum is thrilled to announce the arrival of Nora, a delightful North American river otter, who is set to join the Museum after her heartwarming rescue and care at the Maryland Zoo and will join the VLM's mission to educate the public about the importance of protecting native species and habitats. Later this year, guests can come to meet Nora and witness her playful antics in her new home!
Nora, whose name cleverly reflects her species (N.A.R.O.), was rescued last year as an abandoned pup. Thanks to the dedicated team at the Maryland Zoo, she has grown into a vibrant and curious young otter, capturing the hearts of visitors and staff alike. “We are beyond excited to welcome Nora to the Virginia Living Museum,” said Lyn Heller. “Her spirited personality and captivating charm will surely endear her to our guests.”
Having received exceptional care and training at the Maryland Zoo, Nora has mastered essential skills needed for her species, including hunting and foraging. As she begins her new adventure at the Virginia Living Museum, Nora will also be introduced to her new companion, Moe. This transition aligns with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ North American River Otter Species Survival Plan, which aims to promote genetic diversity and species wellbeing through thoughtful collaboration.
“Nora represents a new chapter for her development, and also a commitment to conservation and education,” Heller emphasized. “We are dedicated to continuing the great work of the Maryland Zoo in ensuring her wellbeing and engaging our community through her story.”
While Nora is settling into her new home, the Museum will continue to update the community and plan welcome events in the future for all to witness the next chapter of Nora’s journey!

The Virginia Living Museum is a leader in natural living exhibits! Native Virginia mammals, marine life, reptiles, amphibians, birds, plants and planets are presented in natural ecosystems and honored for their ability to connect people to nature through educational experiences that promote conservation.
Accredited by both the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (living exhibits) and the American Alliance of Museums (non-live collections), the Museum’s high standards are its hallmark, as only fourteen institutions share this designation in the country. Community volunteers outnumber staff by approximately 5:1 for incredible mission delivery. The Museum is a certified Virginia Green attraction dedicated to environmentally friendly practices and education.
Created by the Warwick Rotary Club and Junior League of Hampton Roads in 1966, the Museum is an independent 501c3 organization, a successful public/private partnership with the City of Newport News and all guests. The Virginia Living Museum is built by the community, beloved by the community, sustained by the community.
