Summer Camps 2023

Museum educators help children explore nature and space through hands-on activities, touring through the Museum, and learning about animals.

Ages: Children must be four years old (for Pre-K) or have just completed the grade you are registering for. Week-long camps are offered for ages 4 through grade 5.

Cost:

  • Pre-K Half Day Camp –  $135 member; $150 non-members
  • K – Grade 3 Full Day Camp – $260 member; $290 non-members 
  • Grade 4 – 5 Full Day Camp – $315 member; $350 non-members

Half Day Camps | Pre-K ages 4-5

  • Once Upon a Time - Immerse yourself in this storybook themed camp. We bring a new book to life everyday through character acting, creating art based on the book, and discovering ways to make ourselves part of the story.
  • Time: 9am-12pm
  • Dates: June 5-9 | June 12-16 | June 19-23 | June 26-30 

  • Eww, That’s Gross: Did you know that some animals like to eat poop? If that doesn’t make you go “eww” then this camp is for you! Discover the world of gross animal facts, and participate in activities that may be stinky or slimy or just plain gross!
  • Time: 9am-12pm
  • Dates: July 10-14 | July 17-21 | July 24-28

  • Let’s Do Science: Investigate the world of physical science – from magnets to liquids to light and beyond.
  • Time: 9am-12pm
  • Dates: July 31 – August 4 | August 7-11 | August 14-18 | August 21-25

Full Day Camps | Grades K-1

  • Spy Academy: Shhh… this is a top-secret camp. Get ready to crack codes, conquer obstacle courses, and more all on the way to becoming a VLM certified spy.
  • Time: 9am-3pm
  • Dates: June 12-16 | June 19-23 | June 26-30 

  • Backyard Naturalist: What’s that?! Explore the exciting ecosystems all around you in this nature based camp. Discover new animals, participate in outdoor games, and become an environmental ambassador through various conservation activities. 
  • Time: 9am-3pm
  • Dates: July 10-14 | July 17-21 | July 24-28

  • Imaginarium: The possibilities are endless when you bring your imagination! Be prepared to imagine, create, and explore the natural world and beyond.
  • Time: 9am-3pm
  • Dates:  July 31 – August 4 | August 7-11 | August 14-18 | August 21-25

Full Day Camps | Grades 2-3

  • Expedition Outdoors: Get excited about the natural world around you as we participate in citizen science. You will develop real-world science skills and work on conservation efforts throughout the museum.
  • Time: 9am-3pm
  • Dates: June 12-16 | June 19-23 | June 26-30 

  • Build it Up, Break it Down: Spend the week creating, building, and sometimes breaking everything from bridges to towers. We will have daily building challenges, animal meet and greets, and lots of fun along the way!
  • Time: 9am-3pm
  • Dates: July 10-14 | July 17-21 | July 24-28

  • A Trip Through Time: Did you ever wonder what’s out there? Come along as we visit planets, fossils, stars, and more on an amazing trip through time.
  • Time: 9am-3pm
  • Dates: July 31 – August 4 | August 7-11 | August 14-18 | August 21-25

Full Day Camps | Grades 4-5

  • Eco Explorers: Join us as we travel around Tidewater Virginia to explore and visit forests, marshes, and the Chesapeake Bay. Each day we will be in the field taking scientific measurements, making observations, and enjoying nature. Make sure to pack your sense of adventure each day!
